Honda CR-V and Civic from China: export buyer's guide
Honda's two global best-sellers — both built in China and available used at prices that make the resale math work in almost any market.

Why Honda exports well from China
Honda occupies a specific position in the export market — not the cheapest option and not the most expensive, but the one where engineering reputation and global parts access combine to reduce risk for the importer:
- Engineering trust that transfers. Honda's reputation for reliability is earned globally and understood by buyers in virtually every market. The CR-V and Civic are two of the most proven nameplates in automotive history.
- Deep global parts network. Honda parts — genuine and aftermarket — are available in every market that matters for used-car imports. This is the practical advantage that separates joint-venture imports from Chinese-brand alternatives.
- Proven resale. Hondas hold value well in most markets. For dealers, a Honda trades faster than an unfamiliar brand — faster turnover compensates for the higher FOB entry price.
- Two body types from one brand. The CR-V (compact SUV) and Civic (sedan) cover the two segments that drive most import demand. A dealer importing both gets product range from a single, trusted brand.
China's Honda joint ventures produce both models at massive scale, and the domestic market's fast trade-in cycle creates a steady supply of 1–5-year-old units at prices significantly below what a used Honda costs in most other countries.
The two models, compared
| CR-V (Dongfeng-Honda) | Civic (Dongfeng-Honda / GAC-Honda) | |
| Body | Compact SUV | Compact sedan |
| Engine | 1.5T (193 hp) or 2.0L hybrid | 1.5T (182 hp) or 2.0L (158 hp) |
| Transmission | CVT | CVT |
| Platform | Honda global (3rd/4th gen) | Honda global (11th gen) |
| Seats | 5 (7 in some variants) | 5 |
| Best for | SUV-preference markets, families | Sedan markets, sport-oriented buyers |
Both are left-hand drive, meet China VI emission standards on recent models, and use Honda's well-documented engine family. The CR-V's 1.5T engine is one of Honda's highest-volume global units — parts availability and workshop familiarity are exceptional.
Which markets these models suit
- Middle East (Saudi Arabia, Iraq, UAE): Honda is well-established across the Gulf. The CR-V competes in the popular compact-SUV segment; the Civic attracts sport-oriented buyers. Saudi's 5-year rule provides a wide sourcing window.
- West and East Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania): Honda parts networks are deep across Africa. The CR-V and Civic are both known and trusted. No strict age limits in many markets means access to the full supply range.
- North Africa (Algeria, Libya): Honda brand recognition is strong. Algeria's 3-year limit means only the newest units qualify — the current-gen CR-V (2023+) and 11th-gen Civic (2022+) are available but at a tighter discount.
- Latin America (Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru, Colombia): Honda sells throughout Latin America. The Civic is a particularly strong brand in the region's sedan market.
- Southeast Asia (if re-export applies): Honda is dominant in Southeast Asian markets. Used-unit flows from China to transit points serve this demand.
Petrol vs hybrid CR-V: choosing for your market
| 1.5T Petrol | 2.0L e:HEV Hybrid | |
| Power | 193 hp | 204 hp (combined) |
| Fuel consumption | ~7.3 L/100 km | ~5.8 L/100 km |
| Servicing | Standard — any workshop | Needs hybrid-trained technicians |
| Shipping | Standard freight | DG declaration required |
| Best for | Most export markets | Markets with Honda hybrid service and fuel-cost priority |
For most destinations, the 1.5T petrol CR-V is the practical choice. The hybrid variant adds fuel savings but requires DG shipping and hybrid service capability in your market. See our EV/hybrid guide for more on hybrid export considerations.
How Honda compares to alternatives
| vs Toyota Corolla Cross / Corolla sedan | Toyota and Honda are the two strongest brand choices for export. Toyota has slightly deeper parts access in some African markets; Honda's CR-V offers more interior space. FOB pricing is usually close — compare current supply |
|---|---|
| vs VW Lavida/Sagitar | Different brand strength profiles. VW is stronger in the Middle East and Latin America; Honda is stronger in Southeast Asia and parts of Africa. Both offer global brand trust |
| vs Haval H6 / Chery Tiggo | Honda's FOB is higher, but brand trust, parts access and resale are in a different category. For risk-averse importers or markets new to China-sourced vehicles, Honda reduces the brand-acceptance barrier to near zero |
| vs BYD Song Plus DM-i | Different propositions entirely. BYD offers hybrid fuel savings and more technology; Honda offers proven brand trust and the simplest possible aftermarket story. For conservative markets, Honda wins |
Buying notes from the exporter's side
- Expect a Toyota-level FOB premium. Honda's brand value means used pricing in China is higher than Chinese brands — and rightfully so. Ensure the retail math in your market justifies the premium before ordering.
- Specify CR-V generation. The 3rd-gen (2017-2022) and 4th-gen (2023+) CR-V are meaningfully different vehicles. Tell us which generation and engine you want.
- Match manufacture date to your age rule. Current-gen Civic production started in 2022; CR-V supply spans several generations. Filter by plate date from the start.
- Think in containers. 2–3 CR-Vs per 40ft container; 3–4 Civics per container. Mixing both models gives product range from a single, consistent brand.
- Factor the full landed cost. Honda's resale premium in your market means the retail price supports a higher purchase cost — but confirm the duty (which may scale with the 1.5T's displacement) before committing.
- Verify before you pay. Full photo set, VIN plate, odometer, and condition notes — all before paying the deposit.
How we supply Honda models
Honda's joint-venture production means some configuration variation between Dongfeng-Honda and GAC-Honda versions of the same model — and the Chinese-market Integra (GAC-Honda's Civic equivalent) adds naming confusion. We cut through this by confirming the exact platform generation, engine, trim and factory origin before quoting. Honda's premium pricing in China's used market means good-condition units move quickly — if we quote a specific unit, the validity window is typically shorter than for Chinese brands. We photograph the manufacturer plate and document condition at a level that matches the price point.

Frequently asked questions
Are China-built Hondas the same quality as Japanese ones?
China-built CR-V and Civic are produced by Dongfeng-Honda and GAC-Honda under Honda's global quality standards, using the same platforms and engines as Honda factories worldwide. The mechanical components are identical; trim and infotainment are specified for the Chinese market. Honda's global quality control applies to all its joint-venture production.
Which Honda joint venture makes which model?
The CR-V is produced by Dongfeng-Honda. The Civic is produced by both Dongfeng-Honda and GAC-Honda (the GAC version was called the Integra in China). For export purposes, both joint ventures produce to the same Honda standard — choose by supply and pricing rather than factory origin.
Petrol or hybrid CR-V for export?
Both exist in China — the 1.5T petrol and the 2.0L e:HEV hybrid. The petrol 1.5T is the practical export choice for most markets — proven, simple to service, no battery shipping declarations. The hybrid suits markets where Honda's hybrid service network exists and fuel economy is the priority.
How does the CR-V compare to Chinese-brand SUVs on price?
A used CR-V from China typically costs more than a comparable Haval H6 or Chery Tiggo at FOB level — usually 15-30% more. But Honda's global brand trust, deeper parts network and stronger resale mean the retail margin in your market often compensates for the higher purchase cost. The brand premium pays for itself in markets where Honda is known.
Disclaimer: import regulations change and are applied by the destination country's customs at the time of clearance. The information on this page is general guidance, not legal advice — always confirm current rules with your local customs broker before paying a deposit. Under FOB terms, import compliance and clearance are the buyer's responsibility; we flag obvious issues (such as vehicle age limits) before you commit.
