Importing used cars from China to Algeria
Algeria allows used-car imports under strict conditions. Here is what qualifies and how the purchase runs.

The rules at a glance
| Vehicle age | Less than 3 years, counted from the manufacture date (VIN/plate) |
|---|---|
| Fuel | Diesel passenger cars are banned. Petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric and LPG are allowed |
| Steering | Left-hand drive — all China-market cars qualify |
| Duty | Varies by engine size and vehicle category — factor into your total landed cost |
| Common ports | Algiers, Oran |
| Payments | Algeria applies strict foreign-exchange controls; agree the payment route with your bank/broker before committing |
Summarised from Algeria's import framework for used vehicles as commonly applied; allowances and procedures evolve — confirm the current rules with your Algerian customs broker (transitaire) before paying any deposit.
What the 3-year rule means in practice
Under-3-years is a tight window: it effectively limits you to nearly-new cars. That is precisely where China's market is strongest — vehicles registered within the last one to three years, low mileage, at prices well below European used equivalents. The critical discipline is counting age from the manufacture date: we verify the VIN/manufacturer plate for every borderline car before you commit, because a car refused at the port for age is the worst outcome in this trade.
A practical example: a car built in January 2024 and imported to Algeria in March 2026 is 2 years 2 months old — safe. The same model built in November 2023 is already 2 years 4 months and tightening. Add a 4–6-week shipping window and even a few months' difference in manufacture date can be decisive.
The diesel ban and your engine options
Diesel passenger cars cannot be imported. Your options from China:
- Petrol — the bulk of the market. Sedans like the Geely Emgrand and SUVs like the Toyota Corolla Cross are available in petrol with automatic transmissions, all LHD.
- Hybrid and plug-in hybrid — increasingly popular, combining low fuel consumption with no charging-infrastructure dependency. Algeria's established LPG (GPL) infrastructure also supports LPG-converted petrol cars.
- Electric vehicles — China's EV and hybrid supply in the nearly-new bracket is the world's deepest, at aggressive prices. Confirm local EV registration practice with your broker.
For hybrids and EVs, note that lithium batteries require dangerous-goods shipping declarations, which we arrange with the freight forwarder as standard.
The China → Algeria process
- Spec and selection. Model, budget, petrol/hybrid/EV preference. We select against the under-3-years rule by manufacture date. For the full import process overview, see our complete guide to importing from China.
- Offer → PI → 30% deposit by T/T. Availability re-verified before the PI; payment route agreed in advance given Algeria's FX controls. See how to pay safely for the standard deposit and document flow.
- Preparation and export. Servicing, de-registration, export licence and customs on our side — included in the FOB price from major Chinese ports.
- Shipping. Container or RoRo to Algiers or Oran — container (2–4 cars per 40ft) is the more common choice; balance before loading.
- Documents. You receive the full export document set — B/L, Commercial Invoice, Packing List and Certificate of Origin — scanned before arrival, originals couriered.
- Clearance in Algeria. Your transitaire clears with the documents; duties/taxes per the current finance law apply at clearance.
Algeria-specific pitfalls to avoid
- FX controls delaying payment. Algeria's foreign-exchange regime means the payment channel needs to be confirmed *before* you lock in a car. A vehicle that ages past the 3-year limit while waiting for transfer approval is a total loss.
- The diesel trap. Some Chinese-market SUV models exist in both petrol and diesel variants. Always confirm the fuel type from the registration certificate — not just the listing — before committing. We verify fuel type as part of our standard pre-PI check.
- Underestimating the landed cost. Algerian duty rates can be significant, especially for larger engines. Use our total landed cost framework and get a firm number from your transitaire before paying any deposit.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the manufacture date such a big deal for Algeria?
Because the window is only 3 years and customs counts from the manufacture date, not the model year or first registration. A "2024 model" built in December 2023 has already used a year of its window. We photograph the manufacturer plate for borderline cars before deposit — no exceptions.
Are Chinese EVs a good fit for Algeria?
The age rule strongly favours nearly-new cars, and China's EV/hybrid supply in that bracket is the deepest in the world at aggressive prices. Confirm local registration practice for EVs with your broker; we handle the battery shipping declarations on our side.
How do payments work with Algeria's currency controls?
Foreign-exchange controls restrict how money leaves Algeria, and the workable route depends on your situation as the importer. Settle this question with your bank or broker first — before the PI is issued. We quote in USD by T/T and can discuss terms once your payment channel is confirmed.
Disclaimer: import regulations change and are applied by the destination country's customs at the time of clearance. The information on this page is general guidance, not legal advice — always confirm current rules with your local customs broker before paying a deposit. Under FOB terms, import compliance and clearance are the buyer's responsibility; we flag obvious issues (such as vehicle age limits) before you commit.
