BYD Seal, Dolphin and Atto 3 from China: export buyer's guide
BYD's pure-electric lineup for international markets — already sold new in 70+ countries, now entering the used export channel at steep discounts.

Why these models matter for export
BYD is the world's largest EV manufacturer, and the Seal, Dolphin and Atto 3 represent its international push — these are the models BYD is actively selling new across Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Latin America. That international distribution means three things for used-export buyers:
- Brand awareness is already building in your market, which makes resale easier than for unknown brands.
- Parts and service networks exist wherever BYD sells new — and they are expanding rapidly.
- Used supply is deepening as China's fast trade-in cycle puts 1–3-year-old units onto the market at 40-60% of their original price.

The three models, compared
| Dolphin | Atto 3 (Yuan Plus) | Seal | |
| Body | Compact hatchback | Compact SUV | Mid-size sedan |
| Battery | Blade LFP, 44.9–60.5 kWh | Blade LFP, 49.9–60.5 kWh | Blade LFP, 61.4–82.6 kWh |
| CLTC range | 400–550 km | 420–510 km | 550–700 km |
| Power | 70–150 kW | 150 kW | 150–230 kW (AWD option) |
| Position | Budget EV, city car | Practical family EV | Premium EV, Tesla competitor |
| FOB price tier | Lowest | Mid | Highest |
All three use BYD's blade battery (LFP chemistry), which has strong cycle-life characteristics and a better safety profile than nickel-based cells. All are left-hand drive in the Chinese market.
What to check on a used unit
- Indicated range at full charge. Compare it to the original CLTC spec for that variant. A 2-year-old Dolphin showing 380 km against a 420 km factory rating is normal degradation; a unit showing 300 km deserves investigation before commitment.
- Charging port standard. Chinese-market units use GB/T. Confirm whether your destination has GB/T chargers, adapters for your local standard (CCS2, Type 2), or whether your customer will rely on home AC charging only.
- Software and connectivity. BYD's infotainment and OTA update system is designed for the Chinese market. In export markets where BYD sells new, localised software may be available; in others, the system works but some cloud features (navigation, voice commands) may have limited functionality.
- Shipping as dangerous goods. All three models require DG declarations for their lithium batteries. This is standard procedure — we handle the documentation — but it affects vessel choice, schedule and freight cost.
Which model suits which market
The choice between Dolphin, Atto 3 and Seal depends on your market's buyer profile, charging infrastructure and price sensitivity:
- Dolphin → price-sensitive urban markets. The lowest entry point into a BYD EV. Ideal for markets with short commute distances and available charging — city taxi fleets, ride-hailing, young urban buyers. Strong fit for Algeria (under-3-year stock available, compact size suits urban driving) and similar markets with young, fuel-cost-conscious populations.
- Atto 3 → SUV-preference markets with growing EV interest. The practical choice for Saudi Arabia and Gulf markets where SUV body style is the default and BYD already has local service. The extra cargo space over the Dolphin suits family buyers.
- Seal → markets with established EV infrastructure. The premium play — competing with Tesla Model 3 on range and performance at a lower used price. Best for markets where EV buyers are already comparing specs and charger networks exist.
How these compare to the DM-i lineup
If you are weighing pure EVs against BYD's plug-in hybrids, the key trade-off is infrastructure dependency:
| Pure EV (Seal/Dolphin/Atto 3) | DM-i (Song Plus/Qin Plus) | |
| Running cost | Lowest (electricity only) | Low (hybrid mode ~4 L/100 km) |
| Charging required | Yes — daily usability depends on it | No — petrol backup when charging unavailable |
| Shipping | DG rules apply | DG rules apply |
| Best for | Markets with charging infrastructure | Markets without reliable charging |
For first-time EV importers in markets where charging is still developing, the DM-i hybrids are usually the safer entry point. Pure EVs suit markets where your buyer already has access to charging.
Buying notes from the exporter's side
- Choose the model by your market, not by your preference. A Seal is the most impressive car on paper, but if your buyers cannot charge reliably, a Dolphin for city use or a DM-i hybrid is the more responsible recommendation.
- Check your country's EV import rules. Some countries offer reduced duty or tax incentives for EVs; others treat them identically to petrol cars. Your customs broker can confirm the current position — it changes frequently.
- Verify battery health indication before paying any deposit. We check the indicated full-charge range on every BYD unit we supply and flag anomalies before issuing a PI.
- Budget for DG freight. Container shipping for EVs costs more than petrol vehicles. Include this in your total landed cost calculation.
- Match manufacture date to your age rule. Seal production started in 2022, Dolphin in 2021, Atto 3 in 2022. Most available units are well within 5-year windows; for 3-year markets, only the latest stock qualifies.
How we supply BYD EV models
Pure EVs require more pre-shipment verification than petrol cars — battery health, charging port condition, and DG documentation all need attention before commitment. We check the indicated range at full charge, verify the battery pack shows no warning codes, and arrange DG declarations with our freight partners as standard. If a unit's battery health does not meet what we consider acceptable for export, we tell you and recommend alternatives rather than shipping a future warranty problem.
Browse current stock to see available BYD models, or tell us which model, your market and your budget — we supply to your spec and reply within 24 hours.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Seal, Dolphin and Atto 3?
The Dolphin is a compact hatchback — the most affordable of the three and ideal for urban commuters or city taxi fleets. The Atto 3 (Yuan Plus in China) is a compact SUV with more cargo space and a higher ride. The Seal is a mid-size sedan competing with the Tesla Model 3 — the most premium of the three, with the longest range and fastest acceleration.
How far can these models actually drive on a full charge?
Official CLTC range varies by variant — roughly 400-550 km for the Dolphin, 420-510 km for the Atto 3, and 550-700 km for the Seal. Real-world range is typically 70-85% of the CLTC figure depending on speed, climate and driving style. Always check the indicated range at full charge on the specific used unit, not just the factory spec.
Is shipping a BYD EV more expensive than a petrol car?
Yes — lithium battery vehicles ship under dangerous-goods declarations, which adds paperwork and sometimes a freight premium. The process is routine and we handle the DG documentation, but budget a margin above petrol-car freight in your landed cost calculation. See our shipping guide for specifics.
Will a BYD charge in my country?
BYD uses the GB/T charging standard in China. In markets where BYD sells new, local-standard chargers and adapters are available. For markets without BYD presence, verify GB/T adapter availability and local charging infrastructure before committing — home AC charging is usually solvable, but DC fast charging compatibility varies.
Disclaimer: import regulations change and are applied by the destination country's customs at the time of clearance. The information on this page is general guidance, not legal advice — always confirm current rules with your local customs broker before paying a deposit. Under FOB terms, import compliance and clearance are the buyer's responsibility; we flag obvious issues (such as vehicle age limits) before you commit.
